Why this matters
The U.S. Fire Administration reports nearly 2,900 home clothes dryer fires are reported in the U.S. each year, and failure to clean is the leading cause. The good news: every tip below is simple, cheap, and proven. None of them require remodeling your house.
1. Clean the lint trap after every load
Every single load, no exceptions. A full trap forces lint past it into the vent line. It takes five seconds and it is the highest-value habit on this list.
2. Get the vent professionally cleaned yearly
The trap catches maybe half the lint. The rest is in your vent line right now, building up. A yearly professional cleaning removes it — this is the single biggest fire-prevention step you can take.
3. Never run the dryer while asleep or away
If a fire starts while you are asleep or out, nobody is there to catch it early. Run the dryer only when you are home and awake.
4. Use rigid metal duct, not plastic or foil
Flexible plastic and foil accordion hose are flammable and trap lint in their ridges. Rigid metal duct is the safe standard. If your vent uses the flimsy stuff, replace it.
5. Do not crush the hose behind the dryer
Leave a few inches of space so the transition hose is not flattened against the wall. A crushed hose restricts airflow exactly like a clog does.
6. Keep the outside cap clear
Check the exterior vent a few times a year. Clear lint from the cap, make sure the flaps open freely, and watch for bird nests in spring.
7. Do not overload the dryer
Crammed loads dry unevenly, run longer, and run hotter. Two medium loads are safer and faster than one stuffed load.
8. Know the warning signs
Long dry times, excessive heat, damp laundry room, burning smells — learn all seven warning signs and act fast when you see them.
